June 8, 2019 Today’s person: Chloe Bronzan

Since far too often we only publicly say nice things about people when they are dead I’ve decided to randomly pick a Facebook friend every day and say something nice about them.

Today’s person: Chloe Bronzan

I owe Chloe Bronzan $300.

See, here’s the thing - some years ago Velina and I had the out-of-the-blue good fortune to be cast in this really insane, deeply moving, important, heartbreakingly hilarious play “Carnival ‘Round The Central Figure.” Chloe cast me, and it was a truly great experience in a show almost no one saw. Really. Almost nobody. But I met a group of fun, fascinating actors who I’ve actually stayed in touch with, and had the chance to be directed by Chloe.

Chloe has a kinda otherworldly gaze, like she’s reading your aura or something. It’s like she expects you to say something important each time you speak. But it’s not disconcerting - it’s warming, understanding. If you were draw an anime with that big-eyed, quiet, intensely intelligent, wryly funny character who actually solves the problem that some interdimensional incubus is sucking the souls of the inhabitants of an inexplicably Europeanized Tokyo which is the setting of so many anime for some damn reason that character would be Chloe.

And I’d really wanted to work with Symmetry because of their commitment to gender equity, but they had limited union contracts and were only producing a couple of shows each year, so that’s why it was so cool to have the chance to work with them - and especially with Velina on this weird-assedly amazing show.

But the problem was the show was in Berkeley, I’m in SF, and it cost a chunk just to get there for rehearsals and performances. And Velina and I weren’t in the same scenes - which meant frequently we were coming separately. So I had to ask for travel money, which Chloe and Symmetry very generously provided. But I know it was hard for a small company - especially on a show the everybody should have seen but so few did.

And now, whenever I think of the various things I will do when one of my projects finally lands me in cash, high on the list is pay Chloe $300
