Since far too often we only publicly say nice things about people when they are dead I’ve decided to randomly pick a Facebook friend every day and say something nice about them.

Today’s person: Cathleen Riddley!
Cathleen Riddley has been a problem for me. My sister’s name is Kathleen, so for years I kept spelling Cathleen’s name incorrectly. Every time I would send her an email I had to stop and think “Is this right?” But it’s not her fault. I blame her parents. Be that as it may Cathleen is one of those people who I had in mind when I wrote a specific role in a play. I hadn’t originally written the part for her, but after she did an early reading of the script she’s the person I picture with each new draft. (Still haven’t gotten that show produced, but the role is hers when it is.) Her open bravery, humor, and selfless comforting on stage is so inspiring I want to showcase it. Her range is amazing. She can go from a smile that would encourage hope in the deepest pit of Hell, to a hurt despair that would make Gandhi eat a burger because why not we’re all going to die, to the shining peace of triumphant justice. Who wouldn’t want to write for an artist like that?
