Since far too often we only publicly say nice things about people when they are dead I’ve decided to randomly pick a Facebook friend every day and say something nice about them.

Today’s person: David Moore!
So I was getting ready to direct Julius Caesar at African American Shakespeare Company, and casting was killing me. Only a few days left before we were going to start rehearsal and I was still looking to fill some key roles - including Brutus. I’d seen some very good actors, but none had the brooding intensity my adaptation required. (I also needed credible west African accents, so there was that, too.) I was starting to get nervous.
Then this guy comes in, all quiet and calm, introduces himself, and knocks my socks off. I was sockless. The pure, pained beauty he pulled from ever line, the flow of his voice through the stream of the language, the piercingly intelligent yet brooding eyes of this handsome hero solved my problems. And in the production he was all that and more. No socks for me.
I also found David to have a sharp, incisive wit, be politically acute, and just be fun to talk to. And a nice guy. Maybe he has some big flaw I don’t know about... maybe forges grocery coupons, or doesn’t do his share of the dishes. Maybe he is less than loving to puppies. I don’t know, but I haven’t seen any of that.
All I’ve seen in rehearsal, in performances, and in every conversation is a really interesting and interested guy who is devoted to his craft, his cast mates, and to being a contributor in making the world a better place.
And I still want my socks back
